After having studied law and political sciences, Thierry Garby became a member of the
Paris Bar in 1972.
He immediately specialized in international business law, assisting foreign
companies in their French operations as well as French companies in their foreign operations.
Thierry
Garby developed an interest in new technologies which was reflected by the publishing of
his book on 'Microcomputer distribution contracts' in 1984 which lead him
to be particularly active in this field.
He also developed an important activity in litigation
and particularly in international arbitration.
Nevertheless, in an attempt to find amicable solutions to disputes each time
this appeared to be possible, he very early was interested in negotiation techniques following
the works of the Harvard University and published 'Sachez Négocier' (How
to negotiate) in 1991. Then, with the development of commercial mediation, he became
a recognized specialist of alternative disputes resolution and published in 2004 'La
Dispute Resolution' (Conflict management).
Thierry Garby has been an officer
in several international institutions. In 1978, he created the international business law
commission of the Association Internationale des Jeunes Avocats (AIJA) (International Young
Lawyers Association). He was the president of this association in 1989.
He was the president of the mediation and conflict prevention
commission of the Union Internationale des Avocats ( UIA) (International Association of
Lawyers).
In this capacity,
he created and is the president of the World Forum of Mediation Centres which periodically
gathers all the main commercial mediation institutions of the world.
He
is the vice president of the litigation commission of the UIA and of the mediation committee
of the International Bar Association.
He is a mediator and arbitrator with most
of the major arbitration and mediation centres in the world.
He teaches negotiation, mediation and conflict management in France and abroad
with a number of institutions such as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris, the
University of Versailles St. Quentin, the Catholic Institute of Paris, the American Arbitration
